Lower Swansea Vale FAS
The aim of the scheme is to reduce existing fluvial flood risk of the River Tawe to people and property within the lower reaches/downstream of the M4 motorway; comprising Swansea Vale, Swansea Enterprise Park, Riverside Caravan Park, Beauford Industrial Estate and the Plasmarl Industrial Estate.
Basic design to comply with the above was the construction/realigning of 6 number embankments in the various required locations.
McCarthy's Role
Various Embankment's
As the main earthworks contractor on the site McCarthy's carried out all of the following activities for the embankment construction/realigning: -
- Construct wheel wash area
- Construct various haul roads as required
- Site strip existing topsoil and place in windrows for re-use
- Remove existing redundant bunds where necessary
- Form new bunds (6 number) consisting of a cohesive core on the wet side of the bund which extends as a toe beneath the existing ground level and general fill to the dry side of the embankment
- Re-topsoiling the embankment's upon their completion

Attenuation Area
Construction of the attenuation area consisting of a number of settlement ponds with an outfall back to the river situated in front of embankment 5.
Additional Work
In addition to the above McCarthy's were given the following additional work whilst on site: -
- 2,650 lin/m of footpath formation construction including necessary path edgings (timber and precast concrete)
- Processing of existing site won material to produce a product - rip rap
- Removal of existing blockstone apron and stockpiling on site for future use
